Photos: Nor'easter packs punch, but Quick Hoops™ caterpillar and low tunnels trial shrug it off

  1. Cool, i tried short hoop tunnels last summer but didn't dare leave them up all season much less winter. What material was used for the hoops and what was the covering?
I used 3/4" pvc pipe (10' lengths) and a spun fabric cover similar to Agribon. I wonder if the PVC would hold up to the weather without flexing? I may try it next year depending on what was used at your farm.

  2. Hi icebear:

On the low tunnels, we used 1/2" galvanized metal conduit -- about $2 apiece for 10-footers. We bend them with our Quick Hoops™ benders, in this case the 6' bender. The metal hoops should hold up better than pvc. The tunnels in these photos are covered with Agribon and a layer of 4mm greenhouse film.

  3. I may have to get one of those benders :)
I used PVC because it could be easily straightened and reused if the whole contraption didn't work out. Now that i have established that i like the hoop/row cover system, i think i will go with a sturdier setup.
May i have the product number for the greenhouse film you used?

    thanks so much!

  4. Hi icebear:
Thank you very much for your inquiry.
Here's a link to the greenhouse film Part #9464. The film is 10' feet wide and comes in rolls 100' in length. The tunnels in the photo are actually about 90' long because you want a little extra row cover and film to secure at the ends of the structures and along the sides.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.
